| Bobwhite Quail |
2007
: Season Oct 27th through Feb 24th
The Collinsworth County area has always been know for
its outstanding quail
hunting. The ranch is no exception and historically has been
host to a large
population of bobwhite quail. With the ranch ranging from
open grass, heavy
shinnery, sage and stands of oak, the birds are provided with
ample natural
cover. In addition feed is provided through the use of quail
feeders during
the difficult months in order to insure a viable breeding
stock for the
spring. Hunting is not done over any feeder as they are provided
only to
assist the birds on the ranch when times get tough.
As with the area in general, previous
drought years severely impacted the
quail population. The spring of 2007 however was ideal with
abundant
moisture, grass, and food stocks which has lead to a resurgence of the population.
Census work done during the late fall of 2007 and early winter months of 2008 has shown
our population of between 3 and 4 coveys per quarter section. All the coveys encountered contained
20 or more birds.
Several packages are offered for quail hunts and are available only during the months of January
and February. Please call to reserve you spot for 2009.
Package #1 - Unguided Day hunt - $200, two hunter minimum
Package #2 - Semi-Guided hunt, your dogs. - $250/day, two day minimum
